Dilemma of coming back to home

I will go back to Hong Kong tomorrow. There will be a language program for newly admitted Harvard student in late July, so I will probably have no time to go back home in July.

Comparing with other mainland students, I am not that motivated to go back home. I do not have proper lightings and desk in my bedroom, while the TV is always on in the dining room, so my reading efficiency drops dramatically once I get back to Hong Kong. A smoker in my family may also badly influence my comfort and health, as I have asthma.

Usually, to maintain my efficiency, I go to nearby libraries and read. That’s quite strange actually, because one of my main purposes of going back home is to visit my family.

I have to admit that I demand myself quite high in study. But I rarely feel that in Tsinghua, as there are numerous smart and diligent guys here.

The situation I meet when I talk to my parents is that they sometimes cannot understand what I really mean and what I really treasure. When I talk about the power of knowledge they think about exam scores. When I think about my academic preparation to be a great PhD and scientist, they talk about preparation for going to US like visa and air ticket, which are quite minor and trivial in my view.

On the other hand, there are also things that my parents rarely discuss with me, such as economic status. I have no idea how much they earn. Perhaps they don’t want me to care about that, and just concentrate on study. However, because of this, I tend to solve the problem by myself if I don’t have enough money, as it seems to me they don’t have enough too.

This should probably be the last time I go back to HK before my study in US. I’d better take more effort and initiative to break the walls, and allow more time for talking with my family.

Parents sometimes should do their part also. Try to listen to their children attentively with an open mind, and turn off the TV before they start.
