Pirated books
By Raymond on May 7, 2009 in book
I have bought some pirated English books from a hawker on the street. The price was only around one-tenth of the originals, 100yuan for all 8 books. I admit that it is not very good to support these unauthorized printings, which are very common in China, but foreign books are really too expensive for Chinese students. Generally we spend only 1000yuan on textbooks in college for one year, so spending another 1000yuan just for fictions is a kind of luxury. If there aren’t such low priced pirated books, I will neither buy the books with copyright, as I cannot afford it, so it should not hurt the author too much. Anyway, I promise I will only buy authorized books when I have income.

Where do Chinese students normally buy pirated English books from? I am also a poor student and came across a street vendor selling some pretty decent English copies. But I am sure there is a proper market for this stuff somewhere that Chinese students must be frequenting.
