Playing bridge with Beijing high school students
By Raymond on May 20, 2009 in College life
The bridge members of Tsinghua were invited to have a mini-competition with the students in RenDaFu (Secondary school, Renmen University). This was the first time for me to visit a secondary school in Beijing. The campus is rather big. Buildings, facilities and securities all look better than those in Hong Kong. Anyway, as it is one of the best high schools in the capital, it is not stereotype in China.
The bridge club of RenDaFu also makes me feel surprised. When we entered the classroom, over 30 members applauded and welcomed us. I have never seen so many students in a bridge club of high school or college. I believe there must be great effort and support from the teachers behind the success of the club. One teacher told me that 2 bridge lessons are organized each week.
I also realized the gap between high school students in Beijing and other provinces. It seems the students at RenDaFu still have plenty of time for extra-curricular activities, like playing bridge, designing poster and creating a movie. Beijing students receive better education and have better chances to enter top universities in China, while students from other provinces are under very keen competition in exams, probably due to higher number of applicants and lower rate of admission. Activities unrelated to scores are unimaginable.
We have bought a movie DVD created by the students to support them. They reminded me of the time when I designed and sold pokers to raise fund for bridge club during high school.
