Compulsory attendance for talks

(a diary written a few months ago)

There is a very interesting phenomenon appearing on the bio students in Tsinghua. Today, a professor from Rutgers presented a talk on epigenetics. After the Q&A session, many students stand up and come to the front—what should be expected is, the students who are curious about the topic want to have some further discussions with the speaker. Instead, the approached to another Tsinghua professor, line up and ask for a signature in their report, while the speaker was totally ignored. So funny!

I also discovered another funny thing. I was one of the very few who did not ask for a signature – talks are only compulsory for masters and PhDs. The speaker should then understand why such a funny system exists in Tsinghua.
